While global wine consumption is declining, the organic wine segment continues to grow and expand its market share year after year. Driven by consumer demand for environmentally friendly products, consumption of organic wines has almost doubled worldwide since 2013. To meet the needs of the market, the three main organic wine producing countries in the world, France, Italy and Spain, will significantly accelerate the conversion of their vineyards. The aim is to produce around 2 billion bottles of organic wine by 2023. These forecasts come from a new market study carried out by the British market research institute IWSR on behalf of SudVinBio. The study provides information about the future of global organic wine consumption and organic wine production in five countries (France, Italy, Spain, Germany, USA). New in this study are the key figures for organic sparkling wines: their consumption has more than tripled in the countries examined since 2013. The complete study results will be presented at the Millésime Bio trade fair (January 27-29, 2020) in Montpellier at the end of January.
Increasing organic wine consumption in the most important markets
While overall wine consumption and the consumption of conventionally produced wine are declining worldwide and in the five countries examined, the consumption of organic wines is increasing. Organic wines are thus increasingly securing market shares. While the share of organic wines only made up around 1.5 percent of the global market in 2013, this share will grow to 3.5 percent by 2023. According to the current study, this increase in organic wine consumption will continue in the five countries examined, which account for more than half of global organic wine consumption.
Production that grows with demand
In response to the high demand for organically produced wines, the world's three main wine producing countries, Italy, Spain and France, will increase their organic certified areas. The pace of changeovers will double in France. This development affects both still and sparkling wine production.
Strong increase in the production of organic sparkling wines
Consumption of organic sparkling wines increased by an average of 19.1 percent per year between 2013 and 2018. This trend will continue over the period 2018-2023 with an expected average increase of 8.2 percent per year. Over the same period, consumption of conventional sparkling wine will increase on average by just 0.5 percent per year. In response to increased consumer demand, production of organic sparkling wines in the five study countries tripled between 2013 and 2018, from 30 million to 95 million bottles per year. It is expected to reach 97.6 million bottles in 2019. Organic sparkling wines also ensure high added value: While the average price of a bottle in the five countries was 14 euros in 2019, it will rise by around 2.7 percent per year until 2023.
From 2021, France will overtake Germany in the consumption of organic wines
In 2021, twice as much organic wine will be consumed in France as in 2013. By 2023, consumption there will increase from 75.4 million bottles (2013) to 195.4 million bottles. France will then account for 20 percent of global consumption. From 2021, France will replace Germany as the leading country in organic wine consumption. With 85 million bottles in 2013 and 160.6 million bottles in 2021 (2023: 170 million bottles), Germany takes second place in the ranking. The trends regarding the consumption of organic wines in the five countries examined are overall positive. The USA is in third place, followed by Italy and Spain.
Italy: largest producer and largest exporter of organic wines
Regarding the production of organic wines, it can be observed that production in Italy and Spain is mainly intended for export, while the organic wines produced in France, Germany and the United States are mainly consumed within the country.
