TAJ MAHAL
Sure, the Taj Mahal in India. We have traveled extensively in the Near and Far East and have always found this blend of Arabian Nights fascinating: sitting on floors and verandas, brass accessories, the scents of spices, colors and silk. We tried to capture a little bit of the special atmosphere in this room. It also has a beautiful wooden veranda overlooking the Elbe River.
SAFARI
We ourselves have often travelled in Africa – in Kenya, Tanzania and most recently with the Dresden-Dakar Rally in West Africa. We were particularly fascinated by the impressive nature and wildlife. The room is comfortably designed and incorporates the typical red and brown tones of the African soil. On the balcony, the evenings are somewhat reminiscent of the veranda of a lodge at the Ngorongoro crater – only the roar of the lions is missing. The apartment has two rooms and two balconies.
FUN
Having managed to snag an evening ticket for the Sagrada Família – and then experiencing the last rays of sunshine through Gaudí's glass art: a special moment. Sunsets in the Elbe Valley can be equally unique, when the Schrammsteine rocks and the sky glow in the evening red. Caspar David Friedrich already captured this special atmosphere of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in his paintings. Gaudí is most evident here in the exceptionally designed bathroom. Like all the bathrooms in the house, it is a small work of art in its entirety.
The apartment faces west and has two rooms and two balconies.
LA PETITE
We know France through the chansons of Édith Piaf and Charles Aznavour, through Limoges, the Auvergne and many other trips – there is hardly a corner of the country that we have not explored. We have always been particularly fascinated by the small patisseries. A little bit of that can also be found in Schmilka. La Petite is a small, bright room with plenty of sun, a balcony and a wide view into the Elbe valley – downstream to the Schrammsteine.
FANDIAN
Fandian is the Chinese word for hotel. During our travels, we were delighted by the ubiquitous pots of hot water for green tea – and at the same time surprised that many hotels were furnished in a more American than a Chinese style. Of course, we also sell green tea. Our Fandian hotel is equipped with antique elements, the likes of which are rarely found in modern Chinese hotels. You will also encounter other special antique furniture pieces in other parts of the villa, which we brought back from Shanghai.
ALI BABA
As a child, I devoured Hauff's "Little Muck" – especially the DEFA film adaptation by Wolfgang Staudte. We found a little bit of this fairytale world on our travels through the Middle East and later especially in Morocco. In the early 1990s, we travelled through the royal cities with our caravan – and rediscovered that special feeling from One Thousand and One Nights. You can sleep like a fairytale in Ali Baba – even if the 40 thieves are missing.
The exceptionally designed oriental bathroom, with its details, is reminiscent of the world of Aladdin and his magic lamp.
HIGH NORTH
It was once more of a "leftover room" under the roof. It is still located under the roof – but today it is generously designed and features a huge floor-to-ceiling window facing west towards the Schrammsteine rock formations. The room is inspired by a three-day train journey in February to Bodø and the subsequent boat trip to the Lofoten Islands to dance under the veils of the Northern Lights. The Schrammsteine rock formations are particularly impressive from here – perhaps while enjoying a glass of sparkling wine and Vivaldi's "Four Seasons".
FUJI SAN
Mount Fuji, which rises above the landscape, impressed us just as much as many other experiences on our travels through Japan. At that time, an overnight stay in a typical Japanese hostel was hardly affordable for us – so we often slept on rice straw mats on the floor. A little of these travel memories has found its way into the Fuji San. The room is characterized by typical Japanese-inspired elements, giving it its own unique character.
