The little knights can climb the robbery castle in the Kirnitzschtal via an original robber's ladder. Guided hikes in Saxon Switzerland are exciting and educational at the same time. Knowledgeable national park guides point out bird calls, show wild herbs and let children marvel at ant migrations. Fairytale tours are also part of the program. The region of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains also has many streams, waterfalls , rivers, ponds and lakes . There are even gondola rides on these, such as on the Rathener Amselsee. Boat trips are offered in Hinterhermsdorf, and historic paddle steamers travel on the Elbe to Saxon Switzerland.
Last but not least, there are a number of caves you can explore. They are the perfect terrain for little adventurers. In total there are around 300 larger caves in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The best known are the Bennohöhle in the Bielatal, the Diebeskeller am Quirl, the Hickelhöhle (Thorwald Walls) and the Gautschgrotte in the Polenztal. In Hinterhermsdorf, the Waldhusche tells the story of forest use in Saxon Switzerland. There are four connected themed trails on the 66-hectare forest-historical outdoor area. History is presented at over 40 stations in a child-friendly and experience-oriented way. The youngest children learn how forests are created, how they disappear, how people use them and how we have to protect them today. The area can be freely explored at any time. The national park administration invites you to free guided tours.

Upper Lusatia holiday region
The holiday region of Upper Lusatia - the region in the border triangle between Germany , the Czech Republic and Poland - is characterized by gentle mountain ranges and bizarre rock formations. More recently, the largest man- made water landscape in Europe has emerged from former brown coal open-cast mines . Blooming gardens and parks have existed here for a long time. The cities of the Six-City Association of Upper Lusatia have an impressive urban and cultural flair. Many of their medieval, highly romantic town centers are still completely preserved. These include Görlitz, Bautzen, Kamenz, Löbau, Zittau and on the Polish side Lubań as well as the Polish part of Görlitz (Zgorzelec).
As Europe grew together, the trinational route Via Sacra was created here, which lovers of sacred architecture travel across borders. The region can also be easily explored by nature lovers by bike along the two main rivers Spree and Neisse as well as on the Oberlausitzer Bergweg - a quality hiking trail. In the Zittau Mountains Nature Park and the Upper Lusatian Mountains, lovely, traditional half-timbered houses characterize the townscape. Sorbs and their Wend sub-tribe live in the region, and many cities have bilingual city and street names.
The culture of the Sorbs and Wends includes magnificent traditional costumes, decorative Easter riders and special organic dishes, which are served, for example, at the Lausitz Fish Weeks® (always in autumn). The landscape is characterized by very gentle mountain ranges, occasional bizarre rock formations and lots of water - lakes, ponds and streams. The lakes are only partly of natural origin.
In Upper Lusatia, brown coal was and is mined in opencast mines. These have now been exploited in many cases and have been flooded mainly since the late 1990s (in some cases much earlier), which has resulted in an ever-larger lake landscape with corresponding local recreation areas growing up to this day (2020). It now includes over 20 flooded lakes, some of which are connected to navigable canals. Here you will find all the leisure activities you could imagine in nature.
In addition to swimming and water sports in all their variations, families can also explore wolf trails , marvel at the fascinating flora and fauna and climb rocks.
Upper Lusatia is also worth a trip for those interested in culture , as centers of (worldwide) jazz, many classical orchestras and, accordingly, numerous chamber music offerings, music festivals and celebrations, light and sound productions, street theater and unique performances were established here from the 1970s onwards summer theaters. Castles and gardens in Upper Lusatia include:
- Baroque castle Rammenau
- Großharthau Castle Park
- Seifersdorf Castle
- Seifersdorf Valley
- Klippenstein Castle
- Prietitz Mammoth Garden

The Dresden Elbland is the region around Dresden, and of course every organic holidaymaker plans at least one day for Elbflorenz (Dresden). But vineyards and the magical villages on the banks of the Elbe are also exciting, incredibly beautiful and have very different landscapes that are charming and even fascinating. On the Saxon wine hiking trail you wander through picturesque vineyards, hike through quiet valleys and explore wildly romantic gorges. As in Upper Lusatia, these lakes were created from former opencast mines and are still being created. Bathing lakes offer a wide range of sports activities, while quiet natural paradises invite you to linger. Varied leisure attractions are aimed at the whole family. There are also many evidence of regional mining and industrial history to be discovered here.
