Description Organic hotel
Located directly adjacent to the Saxon Switzerland National Park is Schmilka, a district of the town of Bad Schandau, which has been awarded the title of "Saxony's Most Beautiful Village."
Small half-timbered houses cluster up the hill to the historic mill, where traditional craftsmanship is practiced in the organic bakery with its old German wood-fired oven.
On the banks of the Elbe River, you'll find elegant hotels, stylish vacation apartments, and an organic restaurant with panoramic views of the Schrammsteine rock formations and the Elbe.
In winter, Schmilka transforms into a winter wonderland – lanterns and fairy lights bathe the village in a warm glow, the wood-burning stove in the mill courtyard radiates cozy warmth, and the air is filled with the aroma of freshly baked goods and mulled wine. The highlight is undoubtedly the heated hot tubs in the mill courtyard.
Whenever you choose to travel to Saxon Switzerland, Schmilka is a wonderful experience in every season!

Description of the organic hotel features:
With us, you book more than just an overnight stay. They opt for a holistic retreat that combines conscious sleep, indulgent cuisine and special experiences.
Our houses in Schmilka have been ecologically renovated, and the guest rooms are designed according to building biology principles. Natural materials such as soaped wooden floors, natural paints and textiles, natural latex mattresses and a low-electrosmog indoor climate create a calm, healthy atmosphere – ideal for relaxing and recharging.
The holistic approach of our establishment is also reflected in our year-round cultural and experiential programs, the so-called rituals. Look forward to a wide range of activities such as morning yoga, guided hikes, workshops and sound meditations. Guided tours of the historic mill and the in-house brewery also offer visitors the opportunity to get to know Schmilka and its history better.
Our naturopathic practice complements our services. Here, alternative practitioner and nutritionist Norbert Schützner will accompany you with a diverse range of therapeutic massages and soothing wellness treatments – for sustainable recovery of body and mind.

Description of sustainability:
Sustainability isn't just a buzzword in Schmilka; it's a way of life. In our fresh, healthy cuisine, we use high-quality, organically grown ingredients, preferably from the region. We also act responsibly when it comes to energy, relying on green electricity from renewable sources like solar power and efficient waste heat recovery.
Equally important to us is the mindful stewardship of our built environment. Our houses have been ecologically renovated, and the guest rooms are designed according to ecological building principles. Natural materials such as soaped wooden floors, natural paints and textiles, natural latex mattresses, and a low-electrosmog indoor climate create a healthy, comfortable atmosphere – so you can feel completely at ease from the moment you arrive. -

Just let your mind wander…
The focus during the careful renovation of our bathhouse was on holistic well-being. Designed according to building biology principles, natural materials such as clay, chopped hay and quark plaster on the walls, as well as local, only soaped woods, ensure a healthy indoor climate. The subtle scent of the wood has a calming effect and invites deep relaxation. Soothing sauna infusions with pure essential oils make every sauna session a special treat, while gemstone water helps to gently maintain the body's fluid balance.
Our panoramic sauna impresses with its view of the picturesque mill courtyard. Relax in the classic Finnish sauna at 90°C or enjoy the gentler bio sauna at 65–70°C – ideal for a relaxing break.
The bathhouse experience is complemented by a diverse range of massages and health treatments in our naturopathic practice. Here, naturopathic practitioner Norbert Schützner will accompany you with individually tailored treatments – from relaxing massages to therapeutic treatments that harmonize body and mind and promote sustainable recovery.

Description of hotel and room facilities:
The Schmilka Bio- and National Park Refuge follows the unique concept of the so-called "Alberghi Diffusi"—a model of "scattered hotels" originating in Italy. Instead of a traditional hotel building, our rooms, apartments, holiday homes, and houses are thoughtfully distributed throughout the village. The reception, restaurants, and workshops also blend harmoniously into the village landscape.
In this way, Schmilka itself becomes the hotel. You won't be staying door to door along long corridors, but rather right in the heart of village life—individual, relaxed, and close to nature. Every path leads through historic alleyways, past nature and traditional crafts, making your stay an authentic experience in the heart of the national park. - number of beds: 130 beds

Description of activities:
Schmilka is a place of peace and quiet – and an ideal starting point to experience the nature of Saxon Switzerland mindfully and at your own pace. Located directly on the Elbe river, the slowing down begins right outside the front door: with quiet walks by the water, observing the changing light or listening to nature.
Gentle hiking trails lead through the surrounding rocky landscapes, forests and valleys. The Painters' Way is particularly impressive, as its fifth stage runs directly through Schmilka. Away from the well-known routes, shorter paths invite you to pause, take a breath and consciously perceive the landscape.
Photography and nature enthusiasts will find countless subjects in the region: morning fog over the Elbe, bizarre rock formations, quiet moments in the forest or wide views from viewpoints. Sunrises and sunsets bathe the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in a special light, making these moments quiet, unforgettable experiences.
Even the quieter seasons have their own unique charm. Winter hikes through snow-covered forests, clear air and almost deserted paths offer intense moments in nature. During the off-season, the region reveals its particularly tranquil side – ideal for anyone seeking respite from everyday life and wishing to recharge their batteries in nature.
