The Hunsrück low mountain range is located primarily in Rhineland-Palatinate and partly also in Saarland . The highest elevation is the Erbeskopf at 816 m. Geologically, it is the southwestern part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, the rocks predominantly come from the Devonian period around 400 million years ago. The core of the Hunsrück is the Hunsrück plateau at an altitude of around 420 to 510 m. Another well-known area that is interesting for hikers is the Simmerner Mulde. The bordering rivers are the Rhine in the east and the Moselle in the northwest. The Deutsches Eck is located at the northeastern tip of the Hunsrück.
The beautiful region between the Rhine and Moselle is very popular with hikers on organic holidays. There are many well-signposted hiking trails such as the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig with the Geierlay Bridge , the Traumschleifen and the Soonwaldsteig. Some of them are part of long-distance hiking trails, others are designated day tours. In any case, hiking in the Hunsrück offers wonderful romance between the rivers, which include the Moselle and Rhine as well as the Saar and the Nahe.
At altitudes of 700 to 800 m, the region is already challenging terrain. Due to the geology of the Hunsrück, in addition to idyllic river landscapes, there are many wooded hills and wide fields. Many hikes lead up to the Erbeskopf, with the tours often leading through the Idar Forest past some mountain streams - a wonderful natural experience! We recommend hiking individually without a lot of luggage: this is the best way to enjoy the panoramas.
There are many guided hikes through the Hunsrück, for example over the Geierlay and on five dream loops. Organic holidaymakers like to choose this long-distance hiking trail Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, which leads from the Moselle to the Middle Rhine Valley and crosses the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. This impressive hiking offer is characterized by the premium “Dream Loops” trails that lie along the path. They get their name because of the varied landscapes with their rolling hills, spectacular rocky backdrops, deep valleys and historical sights. The Geierlay suspension cable bridge is considered the most beautiful of these bridges in Germany .
Hikers can complete the entire Saar-Hunsrück Climb in a total of 10 stages, and individual hikes can be designed as day tours. A path begins at the Cloef viewpoint above the Saar loop and leads to Idar-Oberstein . The path contains many winding paths through the wonderful low mountain range, it leads through romantic stream valleys and mysterious forests, past steep cliffs and over sparse orchards. Added to this are the many distant views in the Hunsrück. This is pure landscape with good air!

Bernkastel-Kues in Rhineland-Palatinate is a state- recognized spa . There are many attractive sights in the city and its surroundings, and there are notable excursion destinations along the Moselle. The unique cultural landscape offers everything you need for a wonderful holiday: hospitable people, romantic places, lively nature, varied nature parks and a huge range of leisure activities. Tourists can visit ancient Roman sites and go on exciting cycling and hiking tours .
A panoramic train runs through the two districts of Bernkastel and Kues - this could be the first excursion in the beautiful city. The tour leads past the medieval market square and the church of St. Michael to the multimedia wine museum and then through the vineyards . Another nice trip would be possible with the Burg-Landshut-Express, in this case the destination is Landshut Castle. There is a great view and regional organic Moselle cuisine . The city also has a swimming pool and a thermal bath with great wellness options . Swimming is also possible in the maars of the Eifel, which are located in extinct volcanic craters. Destinations worth seeing in the city and its surroundings include:
Nikolaus Cusanus (Cusa) is the city's most famous son and his name is derived from it. He was born in Cusa and lived from 1401 to 1464, was a famous scholar and theologian at the time and played a major role as a humanist and church politician. A permanent exhibition about his life can be viewed in the house where he was born, and various events also take place there. He founded the St. Nicholas Hospital in his hometown, which is still a residential home for senior citizens and can be visited today. The library that he once founded is well worth seeing.
If you want to find out more about the city's interesting history, join the “Bernkasteler Doctor”. This regularly leads through the old town and also serves wine along the way. It is a night watchman who, dressed in historical costume, entertains his audience with eerie, beautiful stories. Wine city adventure tours – in a French version as a visite guidée – as well as a rustic Roman tour can also be booked.
There are scooter tours through the vineyards . Landshut Castle - actually just a castle ruin - on the castle hill is the landmark of Bernkastel-Kues . It was built on the site of a late Roman fort that had already stood here in the 4th century. It is a rectangular complex measuring 60 x 30 m, the walls of which are 1.8 m thick and made of quartzite stones. Nobody should miss this destination.
