Organic holiday in the Oberdrautal

The Oberdrautal holiday region enables organic holidays between lakes and mountains . It is located in western Carinthia and is a real insider tip for nature-oriented organic tourism . It is surrounded by the Gailtal Limestone Alps, the Lienz Dolomites and the Kreuzeck Group. Hiking , cycling , mountaineering and winter sports are possible here. The climate is mild, but in winter the Oberdrau Valley is considered to have snow . The Emberger Alm is very popular among winter sports enthusiasts. In the middle of the town center of Berg there is a special button lift especially for children.

Hiking in the Oberdrau Valley

Hikers have many options in the varied landscape of the Upper Drau Valley. There are over 30 panoramic peaks and more than 100 lakes here. Only a few tourists are familiar with the mountain landscapes, but the Gailtal Alps and the Kreuzeck group are fascinating.

Organic holiday in the Oberdrau Valley

Families and very sporty hikers can enjoy the wonderful hiking opportunities away from mass tourism. Some tours would be for example:

  • Mokarspitz tour (Kreuzeck group)
  • Jaukenstöckl (challenging up to 2,203 m)
  • Gailtal Panorama and Alpine Trail
  • Weneberger Alm to the Unteralmhütte
  • Rosmary's herb garden and mountain village tour (family-friendly)
  • Scharnik tour (Kreuzeck group, demanding)
  • Geißlochklamm (family-friendly)
  • Panorama hike Oberberger Alm (family-friendly)

Families with smaller children are recommended to take the easy beginner hikes in the Oberdrau Valley. In many cases they lead along the Drau. Children and seniors also make their way into the Gaislochklamm. There are wonderful paths along the herb gardens in the valley, which smell wonderful in summer. You can also explore panoramic trails with great views with children, and many tours lead to one of the beautiful mountain lakes.

Cycling tours in the Oberdrautal

The Drau cycle path , which is one of the most prominent European cycle paths, is particularly popular in the Upper Drau Valley. Cyclists can choose the length of the route themselves. The path leads mainly flat along the Drau and from there offers wonderful views up to the Kreuzeck group as well as pleasant stops in small, pretty towns on the Drau.

A stop in the herb village of Irschen, among other things, is worthwhile. The Drau cycle path begins as a long-distance cycle path at the origin of the Drau in Toblach, Italy, then leads through East Tyrol, then through Carinthia and finally to Marburg . The most scenic area is perhaps the Oberdrautal outdoor park with the rugged limestone walls of the Lienz Dolomites, the Gailtal Alps and the dark, crystalline rocks of the Kreuzeck group.

The cycle tour can start in practically any holiday resort in the Oberdrautal. The many cyclist inns offer rest opportunities. From a neighborhood in the Upper Drau Valley, it is possible to cycle the entire eastern and western sections of the Drau Cycle Path. If it goes further east from Spittal, new accommodation would be necessary. From the Drauradweg you can always visit small gorges in Berg, Oberdrauburg or Greifenburg, which offer very scenic views. A stopover in Greifenburg is also worth it, where there is a swimming lake and a high ropes course.

Mountaineering in the Oberdrautal

Mountaineers love the Oberdrau Valley very much. The tours are moderately difficult to demanding, and the views of the valley are fantastic. It is possible to stop in rustic huts halfway to the summit. Many experienced mountaineers in the region offer guided tours. Two of these tours would be:

  • Hochtristen at 2,536 m : The summit is in the Kreuzeck group. It is an alpine circular tour that requires endurance. It leads to the promising Hochtristen and – if you have the fitness – also to its satellites. The hiking area is in the Kreuzeck group of the Emberger Alm. From here it goes up to the Naßfeldriegel, further over the Naßfeldtörl and then to the Hohe Grände. Anyone who passed the Sensentorl reached the summit of the Hochtristen, from where the descent to the Törl begins. The path then leads clockwise down to Zweiseentörl. A detour to Schwarzenstein is worth it. The further descent leads to Tuggerbach, then over the Kaseleiten back up to Habrastl at 1,975 m. Shortly afterwards the tour ends.
  • Berg im Drautal – ET Comptonhütte : The path is a little easier and leads over a gravel road. At 1,250 m it changes to the scenic Reissgrabensteig. When the weather is nice, the climb takes place in a dry ditch up to the hut at 1,585 m. Its abbreviation means "Eduard Theodore Compton's Hut", and the Austria Section named the hut after the British painter and mountaineer (1849 - 1921). Up to this point it was all about mountain hiking. Mountaineering would mean then climbing the Reisskofel at 2,371 m.

Winter sports in the Oberdrau Valley

Families can take part in winter tours in the Oberdrau Valley, which are particularly fun. There are 12 ski tours for cross-country skiers and skiers or snowshoe hikers , some of which lead to unknown corners of the Oberdrau Valley. On site, the snow guides in the organic hotels explain the level of difficulty and give recommendations as to the age from which children should take part. The Oberdrautal also has four prominent ski areas:

  • Emberger Alm – mountain in the Drautal
  • Dellach in the Drautal
  • Berger Anger – mountain in the Drautal
  • Bruggen (Greifenburg)

The largest of these areas is the Emberger Alm with Berg in the Drautal. There are 10 kilometers of slopes here, the highest point is at 2,120 m.
