Green electricity in Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance transport

Green electricity in Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance transport - Biohotels.de

Deutsche Bahn - over 150 environmental measures

Traveling by train is climate protection. Since the beginning of 2018, Deutsche Bahn long-distance customers have been traveling in an even more environmentally friendly way on ICE, IC and EC trains within Germany using 100 percent green electricity.

With the green long-distance trains, DB wants to successfully implement its new climate target and reduce specific greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 percent by 2030. This can save up to nine million tonnes of CO2. That's green. Deutsche Bahn's big goal is to be completely climate neutral from 2050.

What is “This is green.”?

Holistic environmental and climate protection has been an issue at Deutsche Bahn for over 100 years. As early as 1905, the first electric train ran with clean electricity from a hydroelectric power station in Bavaria. Today, DB customers can travel climate-neutrally by train or have their goods transported.

Green electricity in trains, climate-neutral train stations and whisper brakes are part of “This is green”.

What we at Deutsche Bahn really dislike is the issue of animal protection and environmental protection

We support the petition " For comfortable train journeys without dead animals! Against animal leather on Deutsche Bahn trains! "

Against leather on Deutsche Bahn

Quote petition:
"For Deutsche Bahn, comfort obviously takes precedence over animal welfare and environmental protection!

In a survey, passengers complained about the ICE-4's lack of seating comfort. Now Deutsche Bahn wants to install almost 60,000 seats with armrests made of real leather in the ICE-3 and ICE-4 trains by 2021! These plans by the head of product management at Deutsche Bahn Oliver Wolf were presented in an article on Spiegel Online on October 23, 2019.

I think this decision in 2019, in times of climate catastrophe and Fridays for Future, sends the wrong signal. This decision damages the new green image of the railway because leather products are an ecological disaster. But this decision is also questionable from an ethical perspective. Leather products are associated with a lot of animal suffering.

That's why I call on railway boss Dr. Richard Lutz and Oliver Wolf (head of product management) to stop using real leather for Deutsche Bahn's seat covers! There are enough comfortable and environmentally friendly alternatives! From textile to cork to vegetable leather alternatives (such as pineapple leather, apple leather, mushroom leather) or environmentally friendly artificial leather products.

This decision also runs counter to the trend towards vegetarianism and veganism. While large automobile manufacturers such as Tesla and Daimler are increasingly offering vegan interiors, the railway wants to bring real leather into the wagons. An absolute disaster for the environmental balance of the German railway.

I want to be able to travel by train with a good feeling and not have to rest my arms on dead animals because Deutsche Bahn considers this to be more comfortable.

Therefore, avoid using animal leather on Deutsche Bahn trains from now on! "
