Skiing on an organic holiday in Meran, South Tyrol
In winter, many skiers head to Meran and the organic hotels in South Tyrol and the area around Meran. The Meran 2000 ski area is located on a high plateau directly above the city. There is an excellently developed network of lifts that enables effortless ascent. Many of the slopes – a total length of ~40 km – are of medium difficulty. The Mittager piste and the steep slope are very demanding and a challenge even for experienced freeriders and snowboarders. The slopes of the Kesselberg and St. Oswald pistes are very wide and also an invitation to skiers with typical holiday skills. For snowboarders there is a new snow park in the rear ski area at the Waidmannalm. Ski and snowboard equipment can be rented on site and stored overnight in a depot. An outdoor kids camp invites the youngest to train with three pull-out carpets and wide, flat slopes. Professional ski instructors look after a ski school and a ski kindergarten , which are certified as “ Specialized children’s ski schools in South Tyrol ”.

Top excursion destinations around Meran / South Tyrol
There are many excursion destinations worth seeing around the city and of course directly in Meran. They can be explored on hikes and mountain bike tours. Here is a small selection:
- St. Hippolyt Church : This church on the Hippolyt-Weg in Merano was first mentioned in a document in 1286. According to archaeological finds, the place must have been inhabited in pre-Christian times - probably around 4,000 years ago. The church is 760 m above sea level and offers fantastic views over Meran and as far as Bolzano. The mountains of the Texel group of the Rosengarten offer a magnificent panorama.
- Knottnkino : On the massive Rotsteinknott porphyry rock between Vöran and Hafling, the artist Franz Messner has recreated 30 cinema seats from larch wood. They look true to the original and are even foldable. Anyone sitting here is looking at a magnificent natural cinema formed by the landscape of the Adige Valley with its towns of Nalles, Marlengo, Lana, Partschins and Meran. Because the lighting conditions change throughout the day, the view is always exciting.
- Apollonia Church : The church was built in the 12th century and has since been rebuilt. The sandstone portal from the 15th century is still preserved today. It is a small church in the very north of the Merano region above Sirmian and Nalles. The region was already populated in the Bronze Age. From the benches set up around the church you can enjoy beautiful views of Terlano, the Adige Valley, the Bolzano basin and the Merano valley basin.
- Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road : As a connection between the Ötztal and the Passeier Valley, the High Alpine Road opens from May or June (depending on snow conditions and other weather). It remains passable until the big snowfalls from October or November. It reaches its highest point at around 2,500 m, which is why it is extremely popular with car, motorcyclist and cyclists. There are viewing points and installations on the road such as the “telescope”, which focuses on the Hoher First and the Granatkogel.
- Lebensberg Castle : The castle is located on the Marlinger Waalweg and offers perhaps the best place in Meran to experience magnificent sunrises and sunsets. There is an interesting museum in the castle, and the Buschenschank Haidenhof is nearby.
- Muthöfe with a viewing basket : The Muthöfe are located above the village of Dorf Tirol in the middle of steep mountain meadows. The so-called viewing basket was set up there as a viewing pulpit. It is located directly at the Gasthaus Steinegg. The shape of a basket was chosen because this container has a great tradition in the region - farmers use baskets to transport hay and for many other purposes. The viewing basket offers a beautiful view of Merano. Two telescopes are also on board.
- Vigiljoch Church : People lived in the Vigiljoch as early as the Stone Age. There has been a cable car here since 1912, which was the second in Europe at the time. The mystical Vigiljoch Church dates from the 11th century and is said to have been built on a pre-Christian hilltop sanctuary. There are countless places to linger around the church, which also offer fascinating views.
