The federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate in the very west of the republic is a very wooded region with the rivers Rhine, Moselle, Lahn and Saar as well as a few smaller rivers (Nahe, Sieg and others). Lake Laacher See lies in the crater of a dormant volcano, and there are other maars (lakes in dormant or extinct volcanoes). The highest mountain is the Erbeskopf at 816 m in the Hunsrück . Important cities are Mainz, Ludwigshafen, Koblenz and Trier.
There are eight nature parks in the Rhineland. One of the largest is the Nassau Nature Park , covering around 500 km² . The Lahn flows through it. The nature park includes the southern Westerwald and the Rhineland-Palatinate Taunus . 100 different species of birds breed here, and 15 species of bats also live here. Endangered reptiles such as the green lizard and the dice snake as well as the very shy wild cats can sometimes be observed here. The park thrives almost without human intervention with forest biotopes, grasslands and orchards. 750 kilometers of hiking lead through it.
The best-known trails are the Four Valleys Tour and the Lahnwanderweg . They lead through a gentle low mountain landscape on the romantic banks of the Lahn. There are numerous educational trails that provide interesting information about the region on informative boards.
Canoe trips are also possible on the Lahn. The Lahn Valley is one of the most popular German canoeing areas with extremely quiet sections that also allow families to paddle comfortably. However, these sections of the route alternate with rapid rapids, so guided canoe tours are recommended for beginners. These start in larger towns such as Nassau and Bad Ems , where the canoes are also rented .
There are numerous campsites directly on the Lahn for fans of organic holidays close to nature.

In the Middle Ages, the region was home to many emperors, princes and knights, as evidenced by the imperial cathedrals of Mainz, Speyer and Worms. Charlemagne and Frederick Barbarossa both consolidated their power here. The latter organized the Mainz Court Day in 1184, to which new buildings were built and princes and their entourage traveled from the German regions, France, Spain, England, Italy and the Balkans. This story, among other things, is shown in permanent exhibitions in Mainz.

Families can experience the ultimate fun in the Asbach laser tag hall, where the gaming environment is brightly colored. The hall is 850 m² in size, there are obstacles of different sizes, hiding places and labyrinths. Spherical music, fog and fluorescent images create the right atmosphere.
Geo Play is interactive geocaching in Mainz's old town, where tricky tasks await explorers at various stations - similar to an escape room.
In the Rolandseck wildlife park near Bonn, which offers a great panoramic view of the Siebengebirge and the Rhine, families can observe red deer and fallow deer, wild boars, mouflons, sheep, donkeys, goats, highland cattle and rabbits in the partly gorgeous landscape that live here among natural habitats live circumstances. Only the wild boars and highland cattle live behind fences for sufficient security, but they have enough space for themselves. The remaining animals run around completely freely, but are of course shy - the wildlife park is not a petting zoo. Visitors are also not allowed to leave the paths. There is a shady forest playground with climbing trees, trampolines and huts as well as lots of rustic play equipment. Grilling is also permitted there, and a kiosk provides visitors with snacks, drinks and ice cream. There is also animal food there, which can occasionally be used to attract game. The barbecue area (usage fee 15 euros) can be reserved at 02228-911639.
The garden show grounds in Kaiserslautern are also a worthwhile excursion destination for families. There are various themed gardens and of course a huge variety of flowers, but the main attraction is dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals in their original size. The children love this as well as the adventure playground with water play area, giant slide, rope park and climbing wall, while teens and adults enjoy the beach volleyball field, the soccer field and the basketball court. The park has existed since 2000 and was built for the first state horticultural show in Rhineland-Palatinate. Partly it is on the Kaiserberg, partly below on flat terrain. Botanical highlights include the cactus, blind, Bible and rose gardens.
