The capital of South Tyrol, Bolzano, is located in the middle of a beautiful landscape in the Adige Valley and is at the same time a bicultural meeting place between Italian , German and Ladin- speaking residents. Three sides of Bolzano are surrounded by high mountain ranges: in the north are the Sarntal Alps, in the southeast the Fiemme Valley Alps and in the west the Nonsberg Group. In the Bozen basin the Etsch valley meets the Eisack and Sarn valleys . The Etsch, the Eisack and the Talfer flow through the valley. Many organic hotels in Bolzano and the surrounding area offer healthy, organic holidays close to nature .
In Bolzano the mighty Alps meet the Mediterranean flair of the south. On the southern side of the Alps, the climate is mild all year round . In the center of the city there are many winding streets, a fruit market and historical buildings, which are best visited with a walk from Waltherplatz. The “Piazza Walther von der Vogelweide” in Bolzano commemorates the medieval poet (1170 – 1230), for whom there is also a monument in the square named after him in Bolzano. It is believed that the German poet came from the region. There are very nice cafés around this square, and in winter Bolzano hosts the Christmas market here.
From here, the cathedral in Bolzano, whose roots go back to the 6th century, is within walking distance. It has two organs and a very impressive carillon with 25 bells that always sounds at 11 a.m. The Via dei Portici (Arbor Alley) was laid out in the 12th century; it expands on both sides with arcades. The many small shops sell souvenirs, fashion and culinary delights from the region.
Farmers in the area have been selling their fruit at the fruit square in Bolzano for several hundred years. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was very enthusiastic about this place; he mentioned it in his “Italian Journey”. In addition to fruit, there are many other South Tyrolean specialties there today, and in autumn the smell of roasted chestnuts wafts across the square. The farmers' market takes place twice a week at Rathausplatz.
Some of the architecture in Bolzano's old town dates back to the Middle Ages; the first settlement was built here in 1170. Monuments worth seeing in the city and its surroundings include:

There are 1,248 kilometers of slopes in the entire Autonomous Province of Bolzano, accessible via 387 ski lifts . A number of ski areas are considered legendary, such as the Wolkenstein Grödener Val Gardena ski area with the spectacular backdrop of the Dolomites. Some of the runs start at an altitude of 3,250 m, for example in Solda all'Ortles. The Pfelders ski area is considered very family-friendly and also inexpensive. Val Gardena near Val Gardena alone offers 175 km of slopes and 79 lifts for skiers and snowboarders . The altitude of the winter sports area ranges between 1,236 and 2,518 m. Special holiday experiences are possible here.
Skiers venture onto the Saslong World Cup slope, families like to stop off after downhill or cross-country skiing in one of the rustic mountain huts, where original Ladin cuisine is sometimes served. The slopes have all levels of difficulty, making a skiing and tobogganing holiday worthwhile even with smaller children. The lifts and gondolas are constantly being expanded, most recently the 10-person “Piz Setëur” lift in Pininfarina design, which has various technical refinements for even more safety and comfort. The Sellaronda creates the connection from Val Gardena to the neighboring areas. Ski hikes lasting several days are also possible.
A total of over 14 varied hikes can be carried out in the region. Some suggestions would be:
You can also take a leisurely stroll along the promenades in Bolzano. The Rittner Horn is worth exploring; families with small children and/or dogs enjoy hiking across the larch meadows between Jenesien and Mölten. The Überetscher walking path is also very family-friendly, it leads to Kaltern directly on the wine route. The “Alter Bahndamm Promenade” was built along a former railway line; it is four kilometers long and paved. The route from St. Michael is signposted with signpost no. 22. It leads in parts through a forest and past vineyards. There are views of the Montiggler Forest and the Schwarzhorn and Weißhorn mountains of the Dolomites . There are some benches and small playgrounds for children along the way. By the way, cyclists are also out and about here.
